Before PVC (plastic) came along all kitchen and bath plumbing was made from brass that was normally covered with a chrome plating.  The brass pipes would corrode and leak and cause problems for the home owner along with being very expensive.  PVC pipe is corrosion proof and will last much longer than brass/chrome pipes and is much more affordable to to the wallet. PVC may also be combined with the chrome pipe you have if you need to make a repair.  But you do need to be careful that you don't over tighten your fittings and ruin the PVC threads.
